If you love traditional music, then come on down to the Calvert Marine Museum on Saturday, May 4 and enjoy the toe-tapping sounds on the Traditional Music stage in the Corbin Pavilion. Kicking off at 11:00 will be Folk Salad Trio with their sweet harmonies and acoustic instruments. They will be followed at noon by Pint and Dale who hail from the West Coast and are nationally recognized for their maritime music. At 1:00, the white hot California Ramblers take over the stage with their hard driving bluegrass and tight harmony. Then at 2:00 you can hear Country Memories singing those unforgettable country classics. And closing out the formal part of the program is Mothers Dream, six Calvert County men who are well known for their soulful gospel sound. At 4:00, everyone is invited to break out their instruments and join in an open jam session.

There are lots of other sounds going on at the maritime festival besides music. The Chesapeake Bay retriever demonstrations are full of shouted commands and splashes as the beautiful animals plunge in after decoys. Water demonstrations will take place in the water at 10:30, 1:00, and 3:00 in the basin, land demonstrations in front of the museum at 11:30 and 2:00. And there’s the incessant tap, tap, tapping in the toy boat building tent. This is a great tradition at the museum and an experience every child should have. You can take a free cruise on the Wm. B. Tennison throughout the day, or look at beautifully preserved antique boats and engines. The Solomons Island Model Boat Club will be sailing their radio-controlled skipjacks, in the basin. You can row an authentic log canoe, or a rowboat. There is no shortage of things to see, do, taste, and hear at the Solomons Maritime Festival.

The Solomons Maritime Festival is sponsored by Calvert County Board of Commissioners, Calvert County Watermen’s Association, Chesapeake Energy Services, Comfort Inn Beacon Marina, Harbor Island Marina, Inc., Holiday Inn Solomons, McCready Boat Yard, Papa John’s Pizza, Patuxent Small Craft Guild, Spring Cove Marina, Washburn’s Boat Yard, and Zahniser’s Yachting Center.
